Particle Diagrams: Pure Substances

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Atoms, elements, and compounds are all examples of PURE SUBSTANCES when you only have one type in your diagram. If you have more than one type of atom, element, or compound that’s considered a mixture.

ATOM

Atoms, elements, and compounds are all examples of PURE SUBSTANCES when you only have one type in your diagram. If you have more than one type of atom, element, or compound that’s considered a mixture.

ELEMENT

An element is a GROUPING OF THE SAME ATOM.

These atoms can be individual atoms or bonded. The important part is that they are all THE SAME.

COMPOUND

A compound is represented by 2+ DIFFERENT ATOMS TOUCHING.

Two or more different atoms must be touching to show the chemical bond between them. This can be done with color coding, as above, or using different shapes for different types of atoms.
